ALATNET Seminars
Theoretical training courses, exploring the leading-edge topics of NWP (high-resolution modelling, data assimilation, numerical methods) and open to the whole European NWP community, were organized regularly in the framework of ALATNET : ALADIN Training NETwork (2000-2004).
The 1st ALATNET training course on High Resolution Modelling took place in Radostovice (Cz) on May 15-26, 2000 :
57 people attended the two week Seminar (participants came from 15 countries; 1/3 from European Union countries and 2/3 from Central and Eastern Europe).
3 over the 4 European Working Groups on Local Area Modelling were represented (ALADIN, COSMO and HIRLAM).
About 25% of the ALADIN participants were newcomers in the ALADIN project.
10 teachers (coming from 7 countries) gave 57 hours lectures and 6 hours were added on demand during tutorial windows : links between dynamical meteorology and high resolution modelling, dynamics, physics, interface, links with assimilation ...
1/3 of the ALADIN participants were supported by ALATNET (ALATNET was supported by the TMR/IHP Programme of the European Community).

The 2nd ALATNET training course on Data Assimilation took place in Gourdon (Fr) on June 11-22, 2001.
51 people attended the two week Seminar (participants came from 16 countries, 47% from European Union countries).
3 out of the 4 European Working Groups on Local Area Modelling were represented (ALADIN, HIRLAM and UM).
10 teachers (coming from 7 countries including all ALATNET centers) gave 37 hours main lectures (commun lectures for all students) and 29 hours of PAT (practical advenced tutorial that took place partly in parallel sessions) : Optimal estimation in meteorology, Observations characteristic, pre-treatment and use, High resolution / LAM / Optimal Interpolation, Variational : incremental, minimization, quasi-continu, TL/AD techniques, Structure functions, Initialization, ...
Nearly 60% of the ALADIN participants were supported by ALATNET (ALATNET was supported by the TMR/IHP Programme of the European Community).

The ALATNET mid-term review took place in the IRM (Institut Royal de Météorologie, in Brussels) on April 22-23, 2002 with the participation of Mrs. Jane Shiel (E.C. representative), Mr. Jean Quiby (expert advisor), all the ALATNET young researchers and representatives of the ALATNET centers. The complete agenda is available with on-line presentations but what cannot appear on these pages is the really good feeling everybody has during these two-half days : the mid-term review was a very important date in the ALATNET project life (as for all projects ...) but it was also a very successfull meeting thanks to all participants.
The 3rd ALATNET training course on Numerical Methods took place in Kranjska Gora (Slovenia) on 27 May - 1st June 2002.
59 people from 14 countries attended the one week Seminar.
8 teachers (coming from the 5 ALATNET centers) gave 30 hours main lectures on numerical analysis, dynamics, physics, variational methods, numerical filters, stochastic aspects and data management and scripts.
1/3 of the ALADIN participants were supported by ALATNET (ALATNET was supported by the TMR/IHP Programme of the European Community).

The ALATNET EU project finished at the end of February 2004. There was an idea raised during the ALATNET mid-term Review (spring, 2002, Brussels) that an opportunity should be sought for the young researchers for meeting and presenting their work carried out in the framework of the project. This last ALATNET seminar on Scientific Results was held in Kiralyret, Hungary on October 15-17, 2003
