Towards mesoscale verification

Classical verification scores (public SYNOP and TEMP) :
        not enough to validate mesoscale forecasts
        insufficient density of these conventional observations.

Use of imagery data (satellite or radar) :
        a "model to satellite" tool already available should be adapted to subjective (then objective) verification
        work on radar : start from 2002 through a cooperation with HIRLAM

Design of a new methodology :
        intense international cooperation (ALADIN, EWGLAM/SRNWP initiatives)

Exchange of all the available local data between the ALADIN countries :
        political and technical efforts

In synergy with data assimilation :
        management of an observations database
        computation of the forecast departure from the observation
        quality control of data
        removal of the systematic errors from the observed data
        density of data networks and so on.
