Precipitation observations from numerous weather stations in Iceland have been analyzed and precipitation at the foothill of mountains is compared to precipitation in areas where there is only a moderate or small orographic influence on precipitation. There appears to be a large interannual variability in the orographic enhancement of precipitation and a moderate positive trend in the precipitation in Northeast-Iceland in recent decades. However, unlike indicated by future climate scenarios there are not clear signs of an overall positive trend in the ratio of precipitation in the mountains to lowland precipitation.
