Several hundred avalanches in the vicinity of 15 towns in Iceland have been recorded and mapped, and the weather associated with avalanches in individual towns has been studied. In most of the cases, avalanches are a result of large snow accumulations in the lee of mountain crests, following heavy precipitation and strong winds. However, in some cases, avalanches occur in gullies that are filled with snow in winds blowing parallel to the mountain sides. An overview of the avalanche database and the weather studies at individual locations will be given.
