The rotor concept in the light of ground-based wind lidar observations

Discrepancies between existing rotor concepts and wind lidar observations during the Terrain Induced Rotor Experemint (TREX) inspired us to reflect what rotors are and to reconcile fundamental meachanisms producing this flow type. Nearly continuous and temporally high-resolved observations with a scanning wind lidar were taken during (TREX) in the Owens Valley, CA. We present examples of the lidar observations during the IOP-6 and contrast our findings with elements of the classical rotor system as published in the literature. Alternative concepts are discussed based on high-resolution numerical simulations.
