Data set source

High resolution radiosonde data from Radiosounding Stations and Ships ( the Knorr , the Suroit, the Bugaev, the Aegir and the ASAP ships) participating in Fastex were received in delayed time in the FASTEX Central Archive.
From these high resolution soundings, low resolution soundings were prepared (by Météo-France/CNRM), in order to complete the real time data set (received in Meteo-france/Toulouse during the field phase).

Information on available data in the FASTEX Central Archive

  • data retrieved from high resolution sounding data
  • Available since: 2 SEP 1999 - Last Updated: 2 SEP 1999
  • Time Coverage (YYYYMMDD): between 19970101 and 19970228
  • Geographic Coverage (decimal degrees): latitude between 16 and 71, longitude between -80 and 10
  • Number of observations:
  • Radiosounding stations participating in FASTEX: 138 soundings
  • Ships participating in FASTEX: 222 soundings

  • Data Processing

Supplementary low resolution soundings were processed from the high resolution radiosounding data available in the FASTEX Central Archive. The software used provides TEMP or TEMPSHIP messages, as they are defined by the WMO.

    Quality Control Processing

Skew-T plots of each sounding were produced and manually reviewed for internal consistency.

    Data format

Data provided as TEMP or TEMPSHIP messages
    (
ASCII files, 1 file for each sounding including site, position, time, pressure, geopotentiel height, temperature, dew-point temperature, wind direction and speed and quality flags).
