Data set source

High resolution dropsonde data from FASTEX Research Aircraft ( the LEAR 36 , the NOAA Gulfstream IV , the NOAA P-3 , the UK C-130 , the US C-130 ) were received in delayed time in the FASTEX Central Archive.
From these high resolution soundings, low resolution soundings were prepared (by Météo-France/CNRM) , in order
  • to complete the real time data set (received in Meteo-france/Toulouse during the field phase)
  • to take into account the corrections made on high resolution soundings.
  • Information on available data in the FASTEX Central Archive

  • data calculated from high resolution dropsonde data
  • Available since:2 SEP 1999 - Last Updated: 2 SEP 1999
  • Time Coverage (YYYYMMDD): between 19970101nd 19970228
  • Geographic Coverage (decimal degrees): latitude between 32 and 68, longitude between -81 and 7
  • Number of observations: 1119

  • Data Processing

Low resolution dropsoundings were processed from the high resolution dropsonde data available in the FASTEX Central Archive. The software used provides TEMPDROP messages, as they are defined by the WMO.

    Quality Control Processing

Skew-T plots of each sounding were produced and manually reviewed for internal consistency.

    Data format

    Data provided as TEMPDROP messages
    (
ASCII files, 1 file for each sounding including site, position, time, pressure, geopotentiel height, temperature, dew-point temperature, wind direction and speed and quality flags).
