dropsonde data from NCAR
balloon meteorogical measurements ("acar") from the 19 super-pressure balloons (from LMD)
balloon ozone data from 6 super-pressure balloons (3 from LMD and 3 from University of Colorado)
ozone soundings from Mc Murdo and a few other profiles
radiosonde data including the high resolution profiles from Rothera, Halley Bay and Concordia
surface observations at high frequency (similar to synop) at Mc Murdo
special data at Concordia (Dome C) from BSRN and the Hamstrad radiometer (from LA)
real-time observations used on the polar cap
ECMWF model data

Field Campaign reaching its end

In September and October 2010, 19 balloons were deployed from McMurdo, 6 with a scientific payload sounding the stratosphere, and 13 of the driftsonde type. From the 13 driftsondes, around 640 dropsondes were dropped over Antarctica and the surrounding seas. Most of these were transmitted in real-time on the Global Telecommunication System, for use by the Numerical Weather Prediction centres.

Here are maps of the balloon trajectories and of the dropsondes released, at the end of November.

More than 330 dropsondes released

Since the beginning of the campaign, 331 dropsondes have been released, either for IASI (or IASI + AIRS) coincidence, or colocation with Concordia station, or over the Weddell Sea.

Here follows the number of dropsondes released for each driftsonde system:

Some driftsondes are already depleted, whereas newcomers have only dropped a few times.

18 balloons launched so far !

As of 21st of October, 18 balloons have been launched by the teams in McMurdo. Only one flight remains to be launched. The coverage of Antarctica is pretty fine, both by PSC flights and MSD flights. Two PSC have terminated their flight and the scientific payloads have been recovered.
