Toulouse, 31 May 1994 : ALADIN is quasi-operational and the first medium term research plan is written

At the end of May 1994, the ALADIN Project reached an important milestone : ALADIN became quasi-operational and the first medium-term research plan was written. A celebration was organized in Toulouse to thank all participants and to honour those that had made the biggest contributions to the project.

Quasi-operational status, 31 May 1994

The work of the seven members of the PECO-financed pre-operational team (with the additional contributions of the Ph.D. students and an established team of Météo-France scientists) leads to a successful conclusion. ALADIN becomes quasi-operational on Météo-France's C98 computer on 31 May 1994. Although the application is run only once a day (in sequential mode with respect to ARPEGE), up to 36 hours only and without a specific data-assimilation cycle, proof of the wisdom of the concept is nevertheless at hand. The scientific status of this first quasi-operational version of ALADIN was presented during the second meeting of the LACE steering committee (Bratislava, 29-30/06/94)

The ALADIN Project is getting near an important milestone : the code runs once a day (00 UTC data) up to 36 hours on a domain of 3500 km x 3100 km centred at 48N/19E with a horizontal resolution equivalent to that of a grid point model with 19 km mesh size and with 24 vertical levels. The computations is performed on the CRAY C98/4 of Meteo-France and a fair amount of graphical products are brought forward to the participating Countries via the RETIM dissemination channel.

To obtain this result only 33 months after the effective working phase started in Toulouse represents a tremendous achievement, even so more when one considers the efforts everybody had to make to ensure continuity in a project that will have involved at that stage 39 people coming from 10 countries and spending on average only 28% of the total duration on it ! This success will surely be progressively recognized to its true value by the relevant international community (this has indeed already started), but there is no reason why the NMSs that participated in this ambitious and future oriented effort should not already express their pride about it.

All that would not have been possible without the great competency and total work dedication shown by the visitors that were representing more than 70% of the work force on the project. In recognition for their contribution, without which ALADIN could never have been brought to this first milestone, Meteo-France is organizing on the morning of May the 31st in Toulouse a small celebration to thank all participants and to honour those that made the biggest contributions to the project. This would of course be also an informal occasion to discuss the impact the RETIM transmission of ALADIN's results will have on your operational activities and what should be the future steps of a collaboration.

The ALADIN project will always be remembered as an example of successful international collaboration and that we are only starting to see its positive impacts on research and operational NWP activities.
